Design Tips

  • Start by designing the 48×48 version, then simplify for 32×32 and 16×16.
  • At 16×16, only the most essential shape should remain — drop shadows, gradients, and fine lines won't render.
  • Use pixel-aligned edges to avoid blurriness at small sizes.
  • Test your 16×16 icon against Chrome's default toolbar background (both light and dark themes).
  • Keep the same visual identity across all sizes, even if you simplify details.
  • Avoid anti-aliased curves at 16×16 — they appear fuzzy. Prefer straight edges or 45-degree angles.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the same image for all three sizes without optimizing each — a downscaled 48×48 looks terrible at 16×16.
  • Including text or letters that become unreadable at small sizes.
  • Forgetting to declare icons in manifest.json — Chrome will show a generic puzzle piece.
  • Not providing the 32×32 size, leading to blurry scaling on Windows.
